Sympathetic Detail:R. F. Deckert and the Art of Natural History Illustration
Art-Science-Creativity Gallery
Through November 22, 2017
For centuries, artists illustrated what scientists discovered, collected, and classified. This exhibition features the watercolor paintings of artist Richard F. Deckert (1878-1971). Deckert spent his adult life exploring the natural world, collecting and researching animals, particularly reptiles and amphibians, for museums, universities, and scholars. His sympathetic portraits of these animals, technically correct to the finest detail, illuminate a fascinating chapter in natural history illustration.
