Ben Hamper is a former GM assembly line worker. He was a longtime columnist for Michael Moore's Flint Voice and later author of Rivethead: Tales from the Assembly Line (1991).
“When the Detroit Free Press described Hamper as ‘a blue collar Tom Wolfe,’ it was right on target. Both Wolfe and Hamper have the surgeon's ability to separate the Siamese Twin notions that America is at once a land paved with streets of gold, joined preposterously at the hip with the reality of millions of people simply trying to make ends meet. Hamper, like Wolfe, incises with uncommon insight.” (The English Journal, vol. 38, no 5, 1994)
“What has resulted on these pages, I believe, is a masterpiece of writing which paints a darkly humorous account of working class life in America.” Michael Moore, from Foreword to Rivethead.
